Yard birds

The polar vortex continued its bluster today, and the birds continued to gobble nonstop in an effort to keep themselves fueled enough to cope with the deep freeze. And, like yesterday, I did my picture taking through the window. The birds were round and fat today, puffed up against the cold. I like the soft colors of this female Northern Cardinal, blending seamlessly with the tumbled leaves and browning grasses around her with her beady black eye keeping a close eye on all potential danger. Sadly, it sounds like some of our local rarities -- including the Rufous Hummingbird that had been hanging out at nearby feeders -- have succumbed to the frigid temperatures.
